Emptiness

Emptiness, ennui, inanition, listlessness, languor: Existence can really start to bear down at times.  Emptiness is a feeling of apathy and boredom, depression and despair, the total absence of pleasure.  While emptiness can be indicative of major disorders, including ADHD, Schizotypal Personality Disorder, and Schizoid Personality Disorder, it can also be a natural human feeling that comes with the ups and downs of modern life.

Causes

  • Grief after losing a loved one
  • Separation from a loved one
  • Relocation for work
  • End of a significant relationship
  • Loss of a job
  • Existentialism

Symptoms

Emptiness likely occurs as part of depressive episode, though not necessarily of clinical severity, so symptoms can be very similar to those of depression, including loss of interest in activities, extreme sadness, and possible anxiety.

Treatment

If feelings of emptiness persist to a point that interferes with normal functioning it may make sense to see a psychotherapist.  Many therapists are happy to simply discuss the issues that plague a client without being concerned about pegging the client with a diagnosis.  In these cases, a therapist will help a client work through their periods of emptiness by attempting to find lost meaning and purpose in life.  The right therapist will understand that life is a journey and sometimes it is disheartening to get hung up in the doldrums.  A therapist will be able to make sure there are no other issues at play, such as depression or any of the disorders listed above.
