Caregiver Issues and Stress

Caregivers commit a large portion of their own time to providing care for children, elderly, and disabled patients.  Providing care on a daily basis can give rise to the caregiver’s own issues.  It’s not uncommon to see burnout among caregivers in stressful positions who feel overwhelmed by their duties.  Caring for others is oftentimes rewarding, but meeting the demands and expectations of the needy takes a toll.

Signs

  • Depression and Anxiety
  • Depleted immune system due to stress
  • Irritability toward recipients of care
  • Insomnia
  • Difficulty focusing on a patient’s needs
  • Substance abuse to cope with stress

Causes

Constant exhaustion eventually takes a toll on a caregiver and they have trouble relaxing even when they are off duty.  Some caregivers attempt to maintain complete control over a patient, causing them to quickly get overwhelmed by the patient’s needs.

Treatment

It’s important for caregivers to reach out for help before it’s too late.  It helps to share the burden among coworkers or family members depending on the situation.  Caregivers commonly feel the need to be in control of all aspects of a patient’s care, but this is a quick way to burnout early.  Caregivers must learn to trust others so they do not feel alone in providing care.  Speaking with a psychotherapist can help the caregiver feel less isolated by giving them an outlet to discuss the things they deal with day to day.
