Dr. Ismael E. Gerena Jr.
Congratulations on making the decision to investigate therapy. For many, this decision is made during stressful times; unfulfilling relationships, difficult situations, family tensions or just depression, anxiety or anger can often be the catalysts that bring people to seek a counselor.
My practice, Indigo Mental Health, is an open and affirming practice for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersexed and questioning. I am familiar with the GLBTQI community, as a former organizer and member of an organization serving at risk youth in the community I have experience counseling and supporting our needs. I work with both individuals, couples and families both queer and traditionally oriented, and I have experience working with parents and friends coping with the coming-out process of a loved one. As a certified sex educator and therapist I am also fully able to address issues of intimacy from a sex positive and kink aware approach.
I am developing therapeutic practices based on existing evidence based therapy to work with complex relationships that more traditional couples and family therapy are not currently designed to work with, including polyamorous, open, ethically non-monogamous, relationships and families.
While I do not identify as a religious counselor, I welcome your expression of faith or personal spirituality as it is often a core piece of your authentic self.
