Abortion Issues

The decision to terminate a pregnancy is never an easy one.  Once the decision to abort is made, there are psychological concerns that go hand in hand with the physical procedure.  In some cases, abortion can be traumatic, but social stigma causes people to not speak out about their experience and harbor their troubling feelings.

Common Post-Abortion Feelings

  • Guilt
  • Anger and Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Significant relationships ending or under stress
  • Sense of loss
  • Avoiding discussion of the issue

Complications

Much of the struggle with abortion actually comes while making the decision to terminate or adopt or keep the baby.  Unplanned pregnancy can put excess stress on already strained relationships.  Because of the stigma surrounding abortion, a person may feel unable to discuss the matter, contributing to feelings of isolation and loneliness.  Anxiety compounds the stress as time continues and a decision feels rushed.

Treatment

Because it feels difficult to talk with friends about socially stigmatized matters, a therapist can help discuss options when considering an abortion.  A therapist will be able to objectively evaluate a person’s situation and provide feedback that considers both sides of the major decision.  The therapist can also serve as a mediator between two people in a relationship when there are disagreements about whether to terminate the pregnancy.
